My Project

It's important for all students to be provided the support they need in order to lead them to a bright future. My students are 6th grade children who mostly come from poverty or near poverty levels, which means that they often fall behind other similarly-aged children due to their backgrounds. Many households do not have the time or knowledge to ensure that their children grow and nurture a love for reading from a young age, which then negatively impacts their overall progress in school. That means that it often falls on educators like me to try to remedy this issue before these children grow up to fear or hate reading.

A great way to encourage reading with children is to make it fun!

Since last year, I began using monthly reading challenges with competitions and prizes to motivate my students to pursue reading on their own. For me to continue motivating my students with this reading challenge, I will need a large supply of prizes to keep up with all the great work my students have been doing. Even receiving a small plushie, a special notebook, a pair of headphones, or a sticker as a reward can help students create positive connections with reading. I also need some new bookshelves to hold all the books that I hope to get to expand our class library.

It is my hope that with these resources, I can keep my students motivated to continue reading throughout the school year, and help foster the growth of some great readers!
