This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Some of my students have not yet discovered books that capture their imaginations. This could be the year that magic happens and they fall in love with books! The stakes are high, if my students don't like reading they won't choose to read and if they don't read they won't improve their skills.

I work at a wonderfully diverse school both in race/ethnicity as well as economic status.

My students are vibrant and energetic and also consumed by the stress in their unpredictable daily lives at home. Most of my students have very low self esteem and don't believe they will achieve success in life. Every day they walk into my classroom I do everything I can to instill confidence and hope in themselves. I work hard to get them to understand that if they set goals and work hard they will achieve success in school and life. I see the ability to read and understand as a critical part of their future success.

My Project

Imagine yourself walking in to a bookstore trying to find a new book for yourself. Imagine not being able to tell one book from another or having to spend time trying to determine how the books were organized. I have worked all year to purchase more and more books that my students will find appealing. I am happy to spend my money buying books for kids to send home. Unfortunately the baskets I have been using for the past 2 years have not been durable enough to stand up to my students' use.

These book organizers will allow me to restore my classroom library and give access to students when looking for specific genres, authors or series.

They will easily be able to spot and access the new books I've purchased for our collection.
