Motivating Math Students with Meaningful Manipulatives

My students need iPads to prepare for the upcoming SBAC tests. Supporting CCCS, students work collaboratively, are engaged in learning and proficiently utilize technology.

My Students

A typical day in 6th grade Math shows students working collaboratively in groups, using a microphone to start their lesson, reading the text from their online book projected via the Doc Camera. Videos and games are integrated into the curriculum to increase interest, motivation, and to promote deeper understanding.

We are in the middle, socioeconomically as well as grade level.

Our school is large, with a diverse population of approximately 1,200 students, 20% of the population is provided free and reduced lunches. Overall, students are enthusiastic and are excited about integrating more technology into our daily work. They are multidimensional, active, considerate kids with a thirst for learning and contributing positively to their world. With the Common Core implementation and the upcoming SBAC testing this spring, it is imperative that students have access and are proficient utilizing and working with a variety of technology. Currently, we use older computers in class and groups work together on these. The addition of new and relevant technology would help students bring knowledge to their laps and obtain resources as needed for their learning objectives. It would also help them to achieve the goal of becoming more technologically astute.

My Project

Students complete practice tests, utilize educational resources, play math games, watch pertinent videos, use their electronic textbook and links to complete their work. Students will work collaboratively, sharing the iPads as well as their learning. In order to competently complete the SBAC testing next Spring, students are required to be technological savvy; this is a means to that end. The iPad is the blackboard of the future. With your help, we can bring the future into our classroom today.

We need to do whatever we can to inspire our students so that their learning is optimized and their opportunities for the future are wide open.
