My Students

You never know what kind of home life or previous schooling experiences your students will have when coming into kindergarten.

Each year I have students who come in knowing all of their letters and sound and are ready to begin book handling skills, and I also have kids that don't even know their own names.

It's so exciting to see how, despite their backgrounds, each student can learn and grow throughout the year to become awesome readers! I love how students in our building work together to encourage each other's growth throughout the school year, even taking their own time to help each other learn.

We have a race track displayed on our classroom wall: 'Racing to Reach our Reading Goals' where each student has a race car and they move along based upon how many sight words they know to reach the end to become a "Word Wizard". We always make a big deal about it when someone gets to move their race car and the kids are so good about saying, it's not about comparing where you are to others, just focus on moving your car towards the end!!

My Project

Kindergarten is filled with eager young minds who are so excited to learn, but who have all come from a variety of different backgrounds and experiences. This makes each child's kindergarten learning experience unique.

Differentiating lesson plans to meet each student's unique needs can be time-consuming, but the excitement in their eyes when they learn something new makes it all worth it!

The first time a kindergarten student reads a book they are so excited and amazed that they are actually reading like grown ups! Most students want to read one book after another and guess what they usually choose? Non-fiction books!

I would love to provide more non-fiction texts in our leveled classroom library so that each student, no matter what their background experiences are, feel excited and independent when choosing a high-interest book!
