My project needs 1 A-Z classroom letter center, sorting mats for sorting the letters, letter recognition learning center, hands on math centers complete set, building words instant learning center, 20 picture story write and wipe boards, 10 writing practice magic boards, and Spanish matching puzzles.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In today's high tech world keeping kids motivated can be a tough job for teachers. Try adding low-income English language learners and the situation is even more difficult. Garfield Charter School in Redwood City is a Title I school with more than 95% of it's population receiving free or reduced lunch and second language learners. Most of these students come from low income Spanish speaking families. We may think motivating these students would be an easy job but it is just the opposite. Most of my Kindergarten students come to school with very little educational background. Their parents may or may not speak English and some have limited Spanish literacy skills. A lot of my students spend most of their day in front of the television or playing video games.
I would like to start this year with motivating, colorful, engaging learning centers that will stimulate the minds of my students and maximize their learning. Engaging my students in hands-on reading, math, and writing centers, I believe is the key to their success in school. While students are engaged I will be working with students in small groups to teach reading, writing and math skills. In order to facilitate this I will need the other students to be actively involved in their learning and gaining independence. The centers that I have chosen are geared toward this independent learning that is crucial to my small group lessons.
The magic boards and write and wipe boards will be used in small and large group instruction to teach beginning writing and reading skills. I will incorporate these boards during center time as well as whole group interactive writing and independent writing time.
Empowering my Spanish speaking students to be independent and motivated learners is the key to the success of my program this year. I am hoping that by using these resources I will be able to maximize their learning and facilitate academic growth potential. I plan to use these materials in the years to come and will be able to benefit not on this year's class but many classes in the future.
