Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach middle school math at a low income city school. For 40 minutes every day my students spend time reading. They have to turn in book reports of books read.

It is difficult to motive 8th graders to read and do their work. The situation is worst at low-income schools. Somehow, students can't understand the benefit of reading and doing their homework. Teachers many times have to use incentives in order to motivate students.

Middle school students love to sit on bean bags and be comfortable. With the bean bags, rug, and baskets I can create an inviting reading area for my students and encourage reading. There are many ways I can encourage the students to read and also to do their math work. For example, I can use the reading area as an incentive to read more such as allowing students who write the most book reports to sit in the reading area for a week, or allowing them to sit in the reading area if they present and share an interesting book. Since I teach math most of the time, I can also use the reading area to encourage students to do their math homework so students who have 100% homework in a month can sit in the bean bags for a week. Students will greatly benefit if their interest in reading increases. Their reading scores will increase and also their math will improve if they continually do their homework.

Help a city school teacher in a low-income school to motivate 8th graders to read more. Reading is very important and motivating them can do so much for them. I can use this reading area to motivate my students to read more.
