My students need to be able to see a visual representation of the value of education. The movie would provide an actual role model for the importance school achievement.
Out students often bring community problems to school and focus on less important things. We are working daily to impact the children by providing experiences and opportunities to highlight the value of learning. We desire meaningful school experiences to connect the learning to the world.
Our school is a large, urban school consisting of approximately 1200 students.
Over 700 of our students start and end the day with a bus ride. The student body is extremely diverse and we serve a significant number of English language learners from variety of countries. Many of the new students have been relocated to America through the refugee program. They are experiencing American culture and formal schooling for the first time. Memphis as a city struggles with great issues of poverty and therefore we are a Title One school. Our parents care greatly for their students, but are often not able to provide as much as others. The school offers a variety of opportunities to enrich the school experience through programs such as art, STEM, social health, choir, band, and orchestra. Competitive sports teams, which tend to do well, are another avenue for engaging in the student lives. Our goal is to continue to build strong connections and equitable opportunities for all.
My Project
The students will be able to have an activity funded for them so all can be included. The activity will include boarding buses and being transported to the local theater for a visual look at the cost and value of education in the life of a teenager. As they are interacting in the community they will be able to practice and demonstrate positive social skills. We will preteach and remind students they will be expected to demonstrate to all observers young people in the community who are respectful, polite, and able to experience positive social engagement. All students will attend and it will not be limited by academic standards, but used to inspire and encourage the efforts necessary to be successful.
By seeing the film HE NAMED ME MALALA, the students will be able to see a living example of a student who takes great pride in her right and responsibility in the area of education.
The story will follow the actual life of an individual who is not so much different from them. Malala rides a bus, Malala comes from a poverty area, and Malala is not always respected as an individual worthy of an education for uncontrollable factors. Yet, Malala stands up for educational opportunities for all and takes brave risks to challenge.
