Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the first time you found yourself reading for enjoyment, imagination, or entertainment? Some of my students have said that they did not know that books exist to be read for fun. Rather, they believe that books are for finding information. Yet, my students are excited to learn more.

My middle-school students are comprised of a diverse mix of Italian, Middle-Eastern, and South American backgrounds.

They attend a school that is large and has a loving, supportive staff. Many of the students in the school do not speak English as a primary language, and many struggle with reading comprehension. The school offers great support through dynamic teaching, but all of the English classrooms are not as amazingly resourced as they could be. While I have a high level of access to technology in my room, I also have a limited number of books that the students can borrow to use for the independent reading I am having them do, and students have voiced that they do not have the resources at home either to help them find books or to help them to enjoy reading books once they have them. Some of the books I inherited in my position are in a much-used condition, with pages falling out and the spines deteriorating. We visited the library and students commented on the limited options.

My Project

Many of my students, in part because they are in a state that heavily complies with high-stakes, summative assessments designed to increase school accountability, have learned that reading has specific, limited, purposes, not all of which are related to reading for entertainment and to expand one's imagination. In my classes I have been talking with the students about their motivations and purposes for reading because I want them to be challenged by independent reading but also to experience increased motivation and desire to read. When I asked students what purposes for reading they knew about, less than a handful expressed that reading was a tool to build and exercise the imagination, a bridge to another world, and an enjoyable experience. While this discouraged me, as a person who grew up loving and devouring books constantly, I feel confident that, with the right resources, students can learn this year that reading can indeed be an enjoyable, desirable experience.

When students can become motivated and passionate about reading, their intellectual curiosity builds and their passions spill over from the ELA classroom to other subject areas.

If students enjoy reading, they will do it more and increase their comprehension skills, which will then raise their productivity and (hopefully) enjoyment of reading within other content areas (e.g. science). The effect continues to build and will benefit students in many aspects of their lives, not just in ELA class.
