Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Middle school is such an unbearably hard time for so many. My goal in teaching middle school is to make it a little less difficult while giving my students the resources they need to succeed. I teach at a Title I school, which means that the majority of our students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch.
When home life is turbulent, I want my classroom to be a place where students are able to relax and feel at home.
Our school provides food boxes and resources to any families in need, and we pride ourselves on taking care of our own community. Many of our students still enjoy their teachers and coming to school and we feel like it's our job to set them up for success to continue to enjoy learning as they move onto high school. So many of our students have been through so much, we want the school to be a safe place for them.
My Project
I teach a variety of subjects including but not limited to, phonics proficiency for ESL students, executive functioning skills, math remediation, and financial literacy for the students at my middle school. This requires a variety of paperwork and flip charts for my students to be able to flip between easily and quickly to make the most of our class time. I would like to use these baskets and put one under each desk so that every student who sits in that desk has their folder, a pencil, dry erase marker, and highlighter quickly and easily available.
Using these buckets will allow my students cross contact due to COVID to be less, allow for a less cluttered classroom, and help them learn efficiently with learning supplies that can be easily cleaned.
My phonics students have phonics flip books that if laminated, could be wiped down with a lysol wipe after use to ensure no cross contamination. My special education students who are learning executive functioning talk regularly about parts of speech, and I would like them to have one of those flip books laminated as well. My financial literacy students need calculators, dice, and budgeting material to be effective in my class. Funding this project would allow me to have students have access to these high quality supplies, while not sacrificing safety.
