My Students

A day in my classroom has many ups and downs. But at the end of each day, we come together for some well-deserved earned time. It is how we celebrate small victories and also problem solve. It only works if the activities provided are worth the effort.

The students in my class are passionate, intelligent, and caring.

They also have difficulty regulating their emotions and behavior. This difficulty is the reason they have been placed in my Special Education Class for students with Emotional and Behavioral Disabilities. On a daily basis we work on core academic skills, while also focusing heavily on the social-emotional needs of each individual student. Because their school experience has often been very negative, my students are not always motivated to take risks with behavior and academic challenges.

My Project

The most important time of the day in my classroom is earned time. It is much more than free time; students earn this privilege by making positive gains in their behavior, social skills, and emotion management. These positive gains are no small task for a student with an Emotional or Behavioral Disability. During earned time students can choose to play games, do an art project, or cook a special treat. The materials I have requested will be used to make earned time truly special. With the kid-friendly cooking supplies they will be able to try out new cooking skills. The brand-new board games, like Connect 4, will teach them social skills such as turn taking and how to lose gracefully. I know that my budding Engineers will use the Legos and K'™nex to build cities, spaceships, or whatever they can imagine. When they have access to such fun activities, it truly will make earned time worth earning!

These materials will jump-start motivation for my students.

High-interest activities may be the initial reason that they try out a new coping strategy, or complete a difficult math problem. However, my students will also feel the positive effects of those choices. Day by day, they will gain independence from the external incentives and be able to rely on their own internal satisfaction at a job well done. We need these supplies to help them bridge this gap, as I know they can and will.
