Mother Nature Recycles

My students need composting supplies, red worms and a worm composter to study the science of composting, understand ecosystems, and to be exposed to sustainable practices. The intention is to inspire by reducing our carbon footprint.

My Students

Children explore, observe, question and problem solve through Project Based Learning experiences in our classroom. "If I had influence with the good fairy, I should ask that her gift to each child in the world be a sense of wonder so indestructible that it would last throughout life." Rachel Carson

Our school is a lively, happy place and visitors feel the positive energy.

More than half of our students live in poverty and receive free or reduced meals. We have the highest number of refugee students in our school district and over 40 languages are spoken in our district. School is an oasis, a haven, where our children have the freedom to test their ideas, collaborate, question, debate, and find solutions. We believe that children need hands-on learning experiences to build their background knowledge. Our intention is for children to learn and be challenged so they may enter the world with knowledge that will enable them to gain access to higher education and good jobs. It is our firm belief that every child deserves high quality educational experiences to succeed.

My Project

The planet Earth is in peril. Our children will learn they can make a difference by composting.

According to the EPA, rotting food in landfills is a substantial source of methane—a greenhouse gas with 21 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide.

In the U.S., landfills account for more than 20 percent of all methane emissions.

In this project our children will :

• Learn soil is alive and can be improved by “feeding” it organic material by actively composting.

• Observe composting happens naturally, and people can speed up the process.

• Learn their activities on land affect the quality of the soil.

• Observe that soil is alive and must be fed to maintain fertility.

• Understand that it is possible to increase the quality and fertility of soil by adding organic material.

• Learn how to compost and hopefully continue the practice in their own lives for decades.

"Students will actively compost and learn the importance of decomposers in the food web, as well as, the concept of recycling through composting. As students add kitchen waste to a 14-gal "vermi-composter," they observe the quick and efficient conversion of organic matter into enriched soil components by redworms." (Source: Carolina Biological)

It is our goal to use compost to enrich the flower gardens around Emerson Elementary. There is no composting program in existence at our school. The vision is to generate enthusiasm for sustainable agriculture and involve all grade levels in creating a community garden and agricultural learning laboratories.

Tom's of Maine inspires companies, communities, and individuals to adopt sustainable practices. "Lightening our environmental footprint is an important goal." Tom's of Maine

Tom's of Maine donates 10% of profits back to communities to help make the world a better place.

Involving children in sustainability will change our planet.
