Morris Musicians Loving Literacy!

My students need musical story books, whiteboards and writing instruments to help incorporate literacy into a music classroom. Using these tools will differentiate ways of using literacy in their lives.

My Students

I have been teaching at this school since March 2015. I teach in a kindergarten to 8th grade school with around 400 students; I see all of them.

Since I am in a poverty stricken neighborhood, resources are very limited.

Parts to my keyboard lab are breaking and the students are getting frustrated. Also, school supplies are paid for out of pocket. Since I am the music teacher, I am not included in the back to school lists. Being a young, new teacher, this is very challenging to support myself and my classroom. The reason I am asking for this is because my students deserve a classroom that right now I can not give them. I want to help my students in every way and I hope you can help me, help them.

My Project

These books, whiteboards and markers will give Morris Musicians a new way to incorporate literacy in our music classroom. The whiteboards are going to be a new creative outlet for our musicians to express themselves by composing their own songs using the pre-made staff on them! Using whiteboards will help save on paper and other class resources. It will be an easy tool for me to walk around and see what my students are doing. Our musicians will be able to write about what they hear, describe their emotions and even answer questions in class.

Incorporating literacy in the music classroom will to reach more students who are turned away from reading and writing in their regular classroom.

This gives students the opportunity to read and write about a passionate topic to them.

The element posters will be vibrant anchor charts for my students to look at. These element posters provide quick answers to questions and give my students the chance to become independent learners. The use of chart markers will be used for the students to create student-led anchor charts and projects.
