it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Everyone should be able to make music. It's the cosmic dance." -- from Harold And Maude (1972) I'm hoping to complete a class set of xylophones to allow my students the opportunity to incorporate the music theory they have learned on to instruments that will bring their musical creations to life.
We are a Staten Island elementary school servicing a multicultural population of students from varying socioeconomic backgrounds.
My students are eager to participate in the arts, and that is a big focus in our building. Our children demonstrate all kinds of talents beyond their academics, and we try our best to offer as many extracurricular activities as part of a well-rounded education.
My Project
My general music students are currently learning how to read and write notes. Last school year, through Donorschoose and the generosity of our supporters, we were granted a set of xylophones. Unfortunately we don't have enough xylophones to make a full class set. Through this project, I hope to change that. I am asking for 17 xylophones or Chromatic Bell Sets. My goal is for each of my students to be able to practice individually and develop their musical skills at their own pace.
Music theory can be a very dry subject without the opportunity to apply what is learned to an instrument.
I know my students will benefit enormously from the addition of these xylophones to our classroom, and will provide them the rewarding experience of actual music-making while employing the theory they are learning.
