Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach grades 6-8 Speech/Drama in Berwyn, IL. We are a title I school, our students are at-risk, 75 percent low-income, and 88 percent are minority.

Our children need somewhere to belong. Some of our middle school kids have already turned to gangs. I want to create a safe haven for kids after school by offering them the performing arts and technology together. Though the students take an interest in theater technology, we do not have the resources necessary to turn our tiny drama department into what these kids need.

We need two wireless body microphones to work along with some of the older sound equipment during live performances. These microphones will be used for plays, speech competition, the talent show, and guest speakers. Not all children want to be actors, many would rather work behind the scenes. Adding this equipment to our department will allow me to teach these children to use advanced sound technology. It will also help the audience in our gymatorium hear our kids' voices.

You can make it possible for children who might otherwise resort to dangerous activities to adventure into the performing arts through the use of technology.
