This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Every year we work on science projects that require the use of microscopes. Unfortunately, we do not have microscopes for our classroom. I often ask to borrow a microscope from the 8th grade science lab. However, one microscope is not enough for a classroom of 25 excited and curious students.
I work at a Chicago public school where about 95% of the student population is at or below the poverty line.
Nevertheless, we are a high achieving school. Parents value education and the students are very conscientious of their academic progress. The students at my school love technology. They enjoy working with the Smartboard, doing research on laptops, and using the listening center. They are very tech savvy. I often learn a lot from them! They are very curious students and prefer to learn through discovery. Every year I try to promote independence in my classroom, and by the middle of the school year many of my students become independent learners.
My Project
The use of microscopes will enhance my students' curiosity and love for technology. My students will be able to actually complete science experiments that require the use of microscopes in a timely fashion. The use of microscopes will promote learning through discovery. It will help create a classroom of more mature learners.
Through the use of microscopes my students will be able to appreciate even the smallest organisms in our world.
The microscopes will help them see that there is so much more to our world than what the eye can see.
