My Project
I am requesting a set of 32 yoga mats for a wonderful, special group of smart, motivated, witty third graders who are eager to learn and grow.
My goal for this project is to bring weekly yoga practice into the classroom and help my students grow socially and academically.
In the past couple of years, during and post pandemic, students have come in struggling socially and academically, with social emotional issues effecting their academic performance. As a person who practices yoga, I have experienced the benefits of yoga practice first hand and I know this will benefit my students too.
Third grade can be a stressful year for students. At this point, they are expected to read to learn, not the other way around and are introduced to many new concepts in all subject areas including math. Practicing yoga reduces stress and anxiety, teaches students how to regulate their emotions and thus helps with self control, which in turn helps students improve their focus and attention span, leading to academic achievement. As an added bonus, there are health benefits as well. Yoga helps students sleep better, builds strength and flexibility and trains fine and gross motor skills. I would love for my project to be funded so that my students and I can begin our yoga journey together this year.
