My students need 2 laptops (and extra headphones) so that when a group is scheduled to go on the computers, everyone in that group will be able to go on at the same time.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Ms. C can I silent read?" is something I have fought to hear since the beginning of the school year. When school first started, I literally had to force my students to read. I had stamina challenges in which the AM class always won. The PM class is starting to catch up now.
I currently have a total of 44 second graders.
Majority of my students do not have access to a computer outside of our classroom setting. There are currently six student computers in addition to my teacher computer. Since we are short of computers, and I have been unsuccessful in getting extra laptops from our school, some of the students have to sit out during their groups computer time. Because of this, when a group is supposed to be on the computers, they often rush and fight their way to the computer center just so they can get a seat and it becomes a first come first serve type of ordeal.
My Project
I have a big class and seeing that we do center rotations means there's a large number of students per group. I currently have 6 student computers in my classroom and the maximum number of students in a group is 8 (minimum 6).
Imagine the disappointment when everyone in your group gets to go on the computers; everyone but you.
Having the extra set of laptops will change that because now everyone in any given group will get the opportunity to go on the computer at the same time. The best part about it is that they won't have to fight over a spot. Not only that but we only have 2 headphones in our classroom. I have encouraged my students to ask their parents/guardians to go out and purchase them headphones; however, not everyone has the funds to do so. The 6 headphones needed will mean each computer/laptop will have headphones to go along with it.
