This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you know how much kids love technology? As a 1st grade teacher I can tell you first hand that they love it! iPads are great motivational tools to support instruction.
I have twenty-four first grade students who attend school in Northern California.
They attend a school that is located in a high poverty area; 100% of the students receive free lunch. My students are very excited to come to school everyday, and are very excited about learning. Many of them have just started to read and are very motivated.
My Project
My short term goal is to have enough iPads for half of my students to access them, while other students work on other skills like reading. Then the groups would rotate, either that day or the next day. On the iPads they would work on Accelerated Reader, which is a motivational reading app that gets students excited about reading and promotes literacy. There are numerous learning apps that could supplement learning in just a small amount of time. Five minutes on a "sight word" app could give way more leveled practice and immediate feedback then a worksheet or flash cards.
My students were very excited when I introduced three iPads to the classroom about one week ago, thanks to the generosity of a generous donor.
Unfortunately we are so busy it is hard to find time to rotate 24 students in a way that gives them adequate access to them, without sacrificing instructional time. Three more iPads would allow my students more opportunities to use the educational apps and become familiar with the digital world.
