This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a teacher, I can relate to Nancy Kassebaum's quote "There can be infinite uses of the computer and of new age technology, but if teachers themselves are not able to bring it into the classroom and make it work, then it fails."
My 5th grade classroom has 26 students that are eager to engage in 21st century learning.
We recently got 2 Chromebooks donated through Donors Choose. These 2 Chromebooks are being used every day, and even though 2 working computers in the classroom make a HUGE difference in my students' learning, it is still not enough for the 26 of them.
My students attend a Title I school where most them are on free and reduced lunch. My 5th graders come from a very diverse neighborhood in Chicago composed of mostly low-income, working-class families. All of them LOVE learning with technology, and many do not have access to it at home, making school their only source of Internet access.
Our school is very supportive of students and teachers and their desire to make the learning environment successful. That is why, with your help, I want to bring more technology to our classroom.
My Project
The immediate use of Chromebooks will be for performing group tasks, providing support for academically struggling students, and enabling the students to use resources that are not readily available in the classroom or at home. I want my students to become experts at using tools on the web for research, type writing pieces, and create Google presentations. I also want them to be able to save their work and access it anytime throughout the day without having to wait long for one of our 2 computers. In addition, I want to be able to guide them on safe and effective use of the Internet for educational purposes.
I truly believe that students who start using and understanding computers early will have a better chance competing in the professional world when they become older.
I want each one of them to become an expert at using Internet-based technologies that will prepare them for their academic and professional future. My goal is to at least have one computer available for every two students. Please, make it possible for my students to have access to technology at the tip of their fingers.
