About My Students

This is a collaborative effort from the entire freshman technology class. These kids loved the robotic items that we used for presentations earlier this year; now they want more!

After getting a taste of the robotic enabled devices, the students decided that they wanted more! By completing some coding competitions, they earned gift cards for DonorsChoose.org resources. Then, after hearing about the News Corp robotics project offer, they decided it was time to grow and expand on their resources.

In our first semester project, students learned about technology enabled devices like Sphero, Ollie, and Self-Driving cars. They created presentations after conducting research and experimenting with these tech tools. The ability to take these technology based toys and relate them to real-world tools is a definite skill in itself. Then, being able to research, collaborate, and communicate their experiences via live streaming presentations, provided them with skills that they will be using daily for college and career.

In Their Own Words

We really like using Sphero and Ollie as tech tools. It would be very useful to get a few more, but a little bit different, and use them to create some cool science and engineering challenges. The Anki cars are amazing! Ozobots would add another style of robot to our set of tools. Then, the power of an Amazon Echo to control items such as the WeMo switches would help understand a lot about the Internet of Things and what is coming in the near future.

Our teacher already showed us a lot of these devices, including drones and virtual reality goggles. In addition, we have been successful in helping get donations for other robotics items for our engineering class. Now, we are hoping to get these new items so that we can create our own cool lessons and even help teach other students, other schools, and get things ready for the next group of technology students.

The near future is going to be filled with autonomous devices similar to these robots and self-driving cars. Being in a STEM based school and class is helping us prepare for these new things. Learning about the Internet of Things, along with these robotics, will be a critical skill for our academic success as well as getting us ready for our possible careers.
