"Click, Clack, Moo: Cows that type!" by Doreen Cronin is one of our absolutely all time favorite books! But what to do when the cows and other farm animals can type and the kids can't? Age appropriate learning keyboards are needed to ensure computer literacy success!
We are a group of mixed ability fabulous in 1st grade students (and a teacher who is spending her first year in 1st after many years with much older students).
There are English Language Learners, native speakers, students with struggling reading, and math skills and a few sweet kids with special needs but all thirsty for knowledge and the excitement that learning brings! We are in a moderate to low income suburban area of a large city. Most of my parents work hard just to put food on the table and consequently, we are about 70% fee waiver.
My Project
These vibrant color coded keyboards will provide my students with the extra guide they need to become proficient with their keyboarding skills as well as working with a QWERTY system. They are also color coded for vowels, consonants, numbers, and function keys allowing visual learning.
Standardized assessments have taken over and are not going away anytime soon- even for 1st graders!
After this year, our students will be taking the PARCC assessment on computers! By having these keyboards, they can practice their keyboarding skills and become proficient keyboarders instead of hunt and peckers! This way they will spend more time actually showing what they know instead of figuring out where the keys are!
