Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Research shows that if a person can acquire a first language, they are more than capable of acquiring a second language and beyond. During my first weeks of teaching, I emphasize on motivating my students to believe that they have the power to acquire a second language and their eyes light up not only because they believe, but also because intrinsically, they find foreign languages appealing.

I teach 115 students, each with a unique personality that strengthens our classroom community and fosters smooth language acquisition, because in the process we are learning more than just another language, we are training our minds to think critically and act globally right from where we are, our Spanish classroom.

Over 61% of my students receive free or reduced school meals and 70% of the student population at our school identify as African-American, making up the largest segment of the student body. For the last three years, we have maintained a 99% graduation rate because our teachers and students continue to pour much of themselves into our school environment.

My Project

One of the most effective and rapid ways in which I have seen my students make most language acquisition gains is via literacy. My high school Spanish II and III students have already experienced the rich success that reading in the target language provides, and they are hooked! I would like to take advantage of this momentum by providing students with the opportunity to read two more novels during the Spring semester.

The act of reading Spanish novels geared specifically toward high school language learners (such as the ones written by Mira Canion) provides rich language and cultural input, sets up students for success, and increases the joy of learning the target language.

These books will allow all of my students to improve their Spanish skills, build their literacy in the language, and assist them in becoming more culturally aware citizens as they learn about the four geographic regions of Ecuador, the Amazon Rainforest, South American animals, the water cycle, and deforestation through reading El capibara con botas and about life and struggles in Cuba while reading El escape cubano.
