This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Kindergarteners are curious hands-on learners. They need repetition and lots of practice to master foundational skills like counting and number sense. Telling others what they are thinking gives them this important practice. Math can often seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be! Most students are still developing a basic understanding of numbers and how they work. The biggest challenge is that numbers are an abstract concept, but kindergarteners are still concrete thinkers. They need lots of hands-on experience to help them gain a strong number sense.

By donating to this project you will help students enjoy a nice treat while also practicing their math skills in a concrete and memorable way.

Students will count pretzels to help develop number sense. Students will sort cereal by color, organize into groups of ten, and then string onto pipe cleaners to make necklaces with 100 yummy beads. They will graph the marshmallows in the Lucky Charms and then use their graphs to compare quantities and explore concepts of greater than and less than. They will use the Skittles and Runts candies to explore concepts of addition and subtraction: I have 3 candies and my teacher gave me 4 more. How many do I have now? They will use the Pringles to explore multiplicative thinking: There are 3 chip cups and each cup has 5 chips in it. How many chips are there altogether? and they will use the gum, and fruit snacks, and fruit candies to explore partitive and equal sharing division: We have 20 pieces of gum, and there are 4 students in this group. How many pieces of gum can each student get? They will then enjoy the treat and use the baby wipes to clean up.
