My Students
The students in my resource classroom bring so much happiness to our school. During the 2021-2022 school year, I will be working with 3rd-8th grade students who have moderate to severe disabilities in a public school setting. Most of my students come from low-socioeconomic households. My students have cognitive, communication, sensory, and behavior deficits that hinder their ability to work independently. Our class paraeducators help to provide the students with the additional instructional support that they need to be successful in their general education classes. When in the special education resource setting, we work on functional life skills, social communication, and academic content presented at each student's ability level.
My Project
During the 20-21 school year, we welcomed students into our brand new middle school. Our resource classroom for students with moderate and severe disabilities has several wonderful resources. However, we are lacking in storage options. Throughout the year, the students were constantly trying to shove papers in their desks and piling up belongings around their work areas. As a result, it was difficult for them to find what they needed when they needed it.
Our students will benefit from improved organizational skills and executive functioning abilities with use of these new storage cubes.
When the students enter the classroom in the mornings, each will go through his/her backpack, and place what will be needed for the day in his/her designated cube. Throughout each day, my paraeducators and I will work on teaching the students how to be more independent with sorting through their classwork to determine what they need to do with each item. The students' desks and work areas will become less cluttered, providing for less stress, greater success, and more smiles!
More than half of students from low‑income households
