My students need fiction and non-fiction shared reading books to practice foundational reading skills and build classroom community.

My Students
My students are fun, compassionate, and curious young children. When they arrive at school in the morning, they race to the schedule, excited to find out what is on the agenda for the day. Every day is fresh, new, and exciting!
Our school is one of the most diverse in the district, and is located in a tight-knit community in the heart of San Francisco.
Many of my students' cousins, parents, and even grandparents have attended our school! The community bond shows through as students giggle, play, and learn together throughout the day.
My Project
Have you even seen a class engaged in shared reading? The teacher is pointing along in a book with words large enough for everyone to see. Students are excitedly reading along using appropriate phrasing and expression. When they come across a tricky or hidden word, everyone works together to solve it using a strategy that students will eventually try on their own. After reading, the class may take part in a rich discussion.
Solving words together and discussing engaging texts brings the whole class together as a community.
For this reason, shared reading is often a student's favorite part of the day! Furthermore, research shows that regularly engaging in shared reading helps students progress through reading levels sooner than they would otherwise.
I want to build my shared reading library to include a wider variety of both fiction and non-fiction texts. Furthermore, I want to ensure that the written text is large enough for children sitting in the back to see. I would especially love to build my shared reading library with texts recommended by Lucy Calkins, someone who inspires me to be a better teacher of literacy each and every day. Thank you for your support!
