Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Every weekday morning, my 34 fifth grade students begin their day by signing into our class Zoom. It's their final year of elementary school, but as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to rage across the country, many parents have made the difficult decision for their child's learning to continue from home.
Our students are inquisitive and eager learners in our integrated special education/general education class in Inwood, NYC.
Some of our students have special needs, others are English-Language Learners, and almost all of our students come from low-income households. Despite the adversity many of these students face, they remain resilient and are able to meet each challenge head on.
My Project
Away from the familiar walls of our classroom, many of our students are facing a new set of challenges during remote learning. Some students are relying on small touch screen tablets to get them through all of their daily meetings and assignments. Others are using cell phones while they wait to be provided with a functional school device.
Now, even teachers are faced with the unfortunate reality that our own devices are not modern, fast, or powerful enough to be successful with online teaching.
Our older laptops are incompatible with many of the new apps, external devices, and video conferencing tools needed to teach students while they are at home.
Outside of their immediate families, I am often the only other face my students see on a daily basis. I plan to use the MacBook Pro to connect with both students and their parents via Zoom and Google Meet where they can finally see my face clearly. This new MacBook will let allow me to run up-to-date Google apps and extensions and share educational videos with my students without the lag.
The bluetooth keyboards will be immensely beneficial to students using tablets. The use of keyboards will increase student engagement, offer our students with special needs additional tactile support, and hopefully lead to an increase in the completion of writing assignments.
Please help me give my students the online instruction they deserve.
