My students need another large whiteboard in our classroom so they can communicate and collaborate in solving complex AP Calculus Problems.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
You've been working for 30 minutes straight on one math problem and it's incorrect. You're extremely frustrated. Where does the paper go? It gets crumpled up and thrown in the trash. Imagine doing the same problem on a large whiteboard with 3 of your friends. Not so frustrating, it's almost fun!
My students are hardworking, curious and committed.
The majority of my students are from socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods, most are the first to go to college, some are the first to graduate high school. They aim to please, and the fear of failing is what builds they walls stopping them from trying new things and being confident in themselves. Being able to practice in class on their own big whiteboard takes away some of the fear they associate with getting problems wrong. The collaborative environment a big whiteboard creates gives the students a safe place to make mistakes and work together learn from them. It's the perfect place for problem solving. Also, practicing on a whiteboard is just more fun than practicing on paper!
My Project
Currently, my students and I use one 4x12 whiteboard for notes and practice. Erasing notes every 2 minutes because of space limitations is difficult in looking at the overall problem. (And problems can be very long in Calculus!) Having another large whiteboard in my classroom will give my students more space to think creatively and make mistakes conducive to good problem solving. The problems my students solve in AP Calculus take more space than a small, personal whiteboard and problem solving on paper is frustrating when you need to be solving a few different side problems at the same time as the larger, main problem. My students will be able to make mistakes safely, step back and look at their problem critically, and fix little mistakes with a small swipe of the finger. Not scary at all! It's fun!
Another whiteboard in my classroom will diversify what students now and in the future can do in my classroom.
Your donation will give my students a place where they can be little more comfortable in trying out their ideas, which is a lot to say in a subject a lot of students would not describe as comfortable. Help us make math more fun!
