My Students
I teach at a rural high school where the whole student body is about 800-1000 students in grades 9-12. Some of my students have life goals of going to college, and I help them prepare to be college-ready by teaching some of the basics of the Spanish language. Another portion has life goals of learning a trade, and learning Spanish helps them be marketable in their trade by being able to communicate in a foreign language.
Being bilingual is the future of the American job market.
My Project
I am building a Spanish course from scratch. I have been teaching six years of Spanish 1 and three years of Spanish 2 and now I want to hopefully start expanding to start offering a Spanish 3/4 at my school.
I am researching resources to use for my future class and I was recommended Somos by Martina Bex from a colleague and my students have enjoyed the level 1 material this year.
I like the Somos because it has very good cultural components and exposes the kids to some good translation activities, reading opportunities, stories, and songs. I am requesting a $200 Teachers Pay Teachers gift card so that I can purchase Somos level 2 and that I can have that for a future Spanish 3/4 class.
