My Students

Phonics readers are boring! Learning to read with texts that read: "Fan ran. Fan and Jan ran. Fan and Jan ran to the tan van." do not motivate my students. Mo Willems has written books that break the monotony. Best of all, his books are absolutely readable by five-year-olds. Super fun too!

I am a Kindergarten teacher at a preK-8 visual and performing art school.

I have 23 wonderful and eager students. They love art, reading, and are fascinated by the natural world. My students are avid writers, and scientists. Interdisciplinary units that tie science, math, and social studies to art and music keep my students engaged and eager. I have a diverse student population and a wide range of abilities and interests. We inherited an old reading series with our building. The texts I use to teach reading are lifeless and dull. I hope to bring energy and fun to our reading groups by using the books of Mo Willems.

My Project

I have requested sets of books by Mo Willems, because his books are simple but hilarious. His illustrations capture your attention and his words amuse and entertain. Students love his art and his characters. Pig and Elephant are thoughtful, kind, and experience many of the things that the typical Kindergartner is encountering in this first year of school. These readable heart-warming stories will create life-long readers! Replacing phonics readers with these fabulous and fun books will make my reading groups full of laughter and learning. Mo Willem's books inspire a love of reading. I want my students to be hooked on great books. His books are nothing like our dog-eared phonics readers. His books are entertaining and addictive. Best of all his books are absolutely readable by five-year-olds. They will foster eager and independent reading. I have asked for guided reading sets to use in an author study that will delight my young learners.

All students should love reading.

I want to make it happen in Kindergarten for my fabulous students. Mo, Piggie and Elephant make it so much more fun to be a reader! My kinders can't resist them. Thank-you!
