The students of WES in Fairbanks, Alaska are as diverse and unique as the city they live in! Our students hail from many different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. This, combined with living in one of the coldest cities in the country, often results in them facing many unique challenges that may prevent them from getting to school everyday, or being on-time. We also strive to make our school a welcoming place that fosters an environment centered on kindness and acceptance. We aim to not only prepare our students academically, but to equip them with the tools they need to become positive, helpful citizens of the community.
Recognizing and praising a student's achievements and positive behavior will produce far more lasting benefits than punitive actions and programs.
We have implemented a new positive incentive program that rewards students on a monthly basis for being attendance H.E.R.O.'s (Here Everyday, Ready, and On-time), and for being a Pawsitive Pup! Students are rewarded if any staff member witnesses them being kind or helpful, or just being a good citizen. These Pawsitive Pups (our mascot is the Wolf Pup) are rewarded with a small prize and recognition of their good deed on a bulletin board. The student's parents will also be contacted to share the positive feedback regarding their child. Students will create stickers for the Pawsitive Pups that they can wear, and that will encourage others to ask them about their good deed! At the end of each month a super star wolf pup exclusive party is thrown for all the winners! Parties include things like a popcorn and movie, a glow dance party, or bingo party. We need these incentive prizes and supplies to implement this program and start this positive rewards based culture in our school!
