More Organization = More Choice

My students need 20 small storage bins to store their math manipulatives.

My Students

Choice! Do you remember having a math worksheet shoved in front of you everyday? I do...and I loved it. But there are better ways to learn math, and you need accessible manipulatives to do it.

Our school is in southeast DC.

It's in a high poverty area with all the challenges that go along with that. I try to make our room as orderly and functional as possible so that we're calm, comfortable and ready to learn. My second graders thrive on taking responsibility for the room--you'd think sweeping was the best thing ever--and for their learning.

My Project

These bins will make a big difference when it comes time for math and math stations. In addition to organizing our manipulatives, they will help to encourage kids to choose their own manipulatives for that day. We play different games (Collect Ten!) and a lot of these games can be done using any number of objects/manipulatives. I love watching my kids get into a lesson because they take ownership of their learning when they control more of what they're doing.

Being upfront, yes, it will make my life easier to have these bins.

Currently, I'm emptying this bin to make room for this manipulative (see-- the snap cubes dumped into a box in the back of the room so that the place value blocks could go in those bins). We make do right now with what I've picked up so far in terms of storage. But my kids could really use all the manipulatives offered at once so that they get the chance to take ownership of what we're doing.
