My Students

Our students are AWESOME! They are unique, creative, and talented. They come from all walks of life. We have a wonderful school and are surrounded by supportive parents and family members. Our school operates just like a community. We provide for our students emotionally, mentally, physically and educationally. The well-being of our students is our top priority.

WMES thrives on teaching the WHOLE child.

Not only do we focus on reading and math, but we also strive to teach our students science, social studies, and the arts. We are a school that is dedicated to creating 21st century learners. We can only do this if we have updated materials and resources.

Our school has approximately 475 students. We have four self-contained special needs classes, as well as one preschool class. Our teachers all have diverse backgrounds and exhibit a variety of teaching styles. Our teachers do a wonderful job of differentiating for our students.

My Project

Students in grades PK-2 love to check out nonfiction titles when they come to the media center. However, I would like to create a small nonfiction section in the library just for them to check out from. We have a big nonfiction section with a pretty good variety of materials, but we do not have enough for our younger students.

Kids this age are naturally curious and they love nonfiction titles because they are full of facts, and fun trivia and are interesting and real!

66% of books checked out each week in my media center are nonfiction titles. Therefore, I need to make sure that what the students check out is going to benefit them and help their reading fluency and increase their comprehension skills.

The nonfiction books I have chosen will appeal to this age group and will be easy to read for the ages I am targeting. However, they will still be engaging enough for older students to check out, as well. That is why they are high interest-low level. They include fairy tales, sports, animals, natural disasters and famous people. These are themes that my students check out most.
