My Project
This is my second year as a school librarian, working in a Title I middle school to develop a reading culture amongst high numbers of self-proclaimed non-readers.
My students love manga, and our manga collection when I arrived was full of titles that were falling apart and series that were missing multiple copies, and some of the most popular series, often considered essential for middle school manga collections, were nonexistent on our shelves.
Though many adults look down on manga's format, dismissing it as lacking in literary merit due to its dependence on illustrations, it is, in fact, not on an art form that is highly engaging for kids, but also revolves around many of the same elements of traditional literature. Manga readers are developing an understanding of characterization, plot, theme, and setting, just as readers of traditional texts do, but for students who may refuse to open a book otherwise, they're doing this thinking because of the stylistic, visual appeal of manga's format.
