Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are as diverse as New York City, in race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, and ability. Our school demographics are 62% Hispanic, 28% Black, 5% Asian, and 3% White, with 85% of students receiving free or reduced lunches. My students come to school every day from all five boroughs with various needs, persevering against all the challenges life has thrown at them.

I have students who come to school with so little - students coming to school without breakfast, and without backpacks.

Some cannot live at home with their parents, and some do not even have a place to call home. Our students deal with many challenges, including mental health issues, domestic violence, and pregnancies. Often, it is a staff member who is there for a student no matter the situation, whether it is showing up to a basketball game, bringing flowers to a performance, or providing a collared shirt before an interview.

My Project

When I ask students to read chapter books, it sometimes feels like I am asking them to reach the moon. But with Manga, it is usually the student asking me if they can borrow a book. Getting students engaged in reading is difficult for many reasons, but one of the easiest to combat is that of interest. Many students only see books when they are assigned for English class, and those are not always high interest, or students see them as boring or completely unrelated to their lives.

We need high-interest, teen Manga that reflect my students' diverse interests and experiences to combat reader apathy.

Manga has become a gateway to making life-long readers out of non-reading students. I have had students who have refused to read even a sentence during class come up to me and ask if they were allowed to borrow Manga books they saw on the classroom shelves. I have had students go from never reading to swapping books for the next installment in a series every time class met. So to keep up with reader demand and interest, we need more manga titles to fill our shelves and encourage that reading spirit!
