Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students enjoy coming to the library and rely on it for current, relevant books they can use for their research reports as well as for fun, recreational reading.
Even though we are in the heart of Silicon Valley, the majority of our K-8th grade students are from low-income families.
Most of our students qualify for free/reduced-price lunch and speak English as a second language. There are students who are self-motivated with high aspirations, but there are also many others who are struggling academically. All of our students need and deserve to be exposed to quality, up-to-date books which will open their minds and enrich their world.
My Project
I've selected books on a variety of topics and reading levels that the students and teachers have reqested to see in the library. Some of the nonfiction books are in graphic novel format which have become very popular with the students.
The students are more apt to read and learn about different subjects due to the appeal and readability of these vibrant and colorfully formatted nonfiction graphic novel books.
In addition to the library books, I'm also requesting felt board stories to be used with the younger students during story time. The students especially enjoy the retelling of classic stories in felt board format. They become more confident and verbal when they stand in front of their peers and use the felt story characters to recall and retell the stories.
