My Students

My school is a beautiful place where refugees, immigrants, long-time residents, and the community embrace the diversity and experiences of the students. Many of our city's refugee services are located in this neighborhood so it's the first stop for many families coming to the U.S. from difficult situations. The school becomes a special place for students to develop their identity in our country.

The music room is a special place because music is a universal language.

Students learn drumming, guitar, recorders, xylophones, dance, singing, and composition.Music class is like a laboratory for hands on learning.

My Project

My students love learning the guitar. My middle school classes are bigger this year than before and we are short three guitars. Right now students are sharing, and using some older, broken guitars. Having access to instruments allows students to learn faster.

Our music program is expanding, and it's so exciting, but we are running out of music stands.

Students are taping their music to the walls and the chair in front of them, wrecking the music, and making it hard to see. Having enough music stands means that kids can easily break into smaller groups to work on specific skills, and they can easily see what they are working on.
