Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our sweet students come from diverse backgrounds and bring a large array of experiences to our classrooms and school. One thing they all have in common is using their imaginations and creating a happy world within our walls.
Daily, our students overcome a variety of basic challenges - getting breakfast, making it to school, having homework completed.
Our school is a Title I urban school with the most diverse population in our district. Over 80% of our students qualify to receive free or reduced-price lunch. School becomes a safe haven for these scholars - where expectations are the same every day and their basic needs are met. While they come to school to learn, they thrive when they are given the opportunity to utilize a variety of resources to make learning real and fun. This is what keeps them coming back and keeps them hooked into learning the rigorous academic standards.
My Project
I have been fortunate enough to have two other projects funded to help create a space for my students to learn through discovery, creativity and design. Now, it's time to design the space in my classroom to do this! Because I envision our makerspace as an area for students to go to after work is finished, or as a choice, Sterilite containers will help keep projects safe when not being crafted. Supplies such as Perler beads and punches will be added to the space to enhance creativity with projects.
By having a dedicated space in our classroom for discovery and learning through creativity, my students will be able to access this area often and without having to wait for supplies to be available.
I am so excited to see the evolution of this space and what it will mean to my students to be able to have a space to create and explore. Just touching on this a bit this past year has made me see how incredibly important play and exploration are to young children - this space will give them many opportunities all year long to try new things that they might not otherwise be able to try!
