My students need more flexible seating, specifically clipboards and rugs to sit on and bean bag chairs to be more comfortable in the classroom. This provides an alternative to the hard chairs we have.
My school is very rural and very high poverty. My students are technologically advanced, but only because our teachers put emphasis on 21st-century skills. Teaching junior high and high school students is one of the greatest privileges I've had in my life to date. I love spending time with them, helping them learn, and watching them be successful. My Project
I have a multifunction classroom. I have art part of the day and English the other part. I would like to provide my students with the ability to choose their preferred seating. The ability to choose their seating has proven to make a student more engaged in their own learning and more focused on what they are doing. Students do their best when they are comfortable. Heck, I do my best work when I'm comfortable. The more choices students have the more they will feel invested and responsible for their learning. When I give my students choices I see greater engagement, more excitement, and a higher desire to learn. Their effort increases and there is a certain amount of pride that comes out in their work.
My students deserve the right to choose how they sit.
Right now I only have the high backed chairs that are old and not as comfortable to everyone for working. The bean bags and rugs would provide another choice. The clipboards and lapboards will provide workspace for those students picking the soft surfaces.
