My Project
This Spring I am continuing my Farm to Fork educational series with the Library as well as students in the special needs classroom. Students learn about nutrition, composting, growing plants, starting a garden, as well as how to hatch and raise chickens. The items I am requesting are to enrich opportunities for students to actually help plant a school garden, compost food scraps, and learn how our food waste can actually be fed to chickens. I share the activities I am doing in my classroom with the rest of the school and school system via web cams. Students will learn how they can grow some of their own food to help with food security as well as how locally grown food leaves a smaller carbon footprint. We will be doing this, by planting seeds, watching them grow into plants, and then be transplanted in the school garden, or taken home to grow over the summer. The seed starter tray is so that the students with special needs can have the plants grow in their classroom, so that they can really observe the process.
I am also asking for an automated see-through incubator to hatch eggs.
That way the students can see the chicks from pip to zip to hatch. Students throughout the system watch the chickens hatch and grow the first few weeks, again through a webcam. We are asking for the portable chicken coop, with a detachable bottom for housing the chicks as they start to feather out. The pop up coop should meet the needs of the students, since it is easily put up and washable. Chickens when feathered out go to a working farm that is in an inner city, that is used for educational purposes.
