I work at an amazing, urban elementary school that focuses on global citizenship and sustainability. We focus on building character alongside the learning we do in our International Baccalaureate® (IB) programming. IB is built on the foundation of developing learning behaviors; mindsets that will help a student become a caring, engaged, and solution-oriented member of not only their local community but our global society.
My students are curious and want to know more about the world and how to have a positive impact on it.
They research new concepts, present what they have learned, and take action to make personal improvements to their local and global communities.
My Project
As I have reflected on diversity in my classroom and the ways I may be contributing to the exclusion of students of color. I realize the importance of my students having books with characters they can relate to. They need to see themselves in the pages of the stories they read. They need their experiences validated. They need to feel that they belong.
By providing students with these books, you will help to create a classroom that is welcoming, inclusive, and tells a more complete history.
Many of these books align directly with the migration and exploration unit we cover in 4th-grade social studies. They also illustrate for students the struggle for equality and inclusion, which we spend much of our time exploring in our International Bachealorete program.
