Help me give my students a variety of classic board games and art materials for "choice time" and two surf desks for additional flexible seating options.
I'm a third, fourth, and fifth grade Special Education teacher in Red Hook, Brooklyn. My school is a Title I school, and over 95% of its students receive free lunch. I teach in a self-contained classroom where all of my students have mild to moderate learning disabilities.
The neighborhood my school is located in contains one of New York City's largest public housing developments, and most of my students reside there.
Due to the geographic location of the neighborhood, there are few trains and bus routes servicing the community, so my students are very isolated from all of the bells and whistles of New York City.
My Project
Choice Time! It's undoubtedly one of my students' favorite times of day! As a reward for meeting behavior targets and completing all classwork for the day, I allow my students a few minutes each day to select a preferred activity.
While my current Choice Time options are still in high demand, they will lose their magic if overused throughout the year.
This is where you come in! We need a few more options! The Snap Circuits kit will be a big hit. We already have two in the classroom, but this one has a ton more fun circuits for the students to use. And as they use this kit, they will also be building their problem-solving and STEM skills!
The Spirograph, Spin Art Maker, and Crayola Light-Up tablets are low- or no-tech materials that my artistic students will love. Plus, they will get to bring home their creations at the end of Choice Time!
The Concentration and Operation board games are great to foster fine-motor skills and collaboration. Plus, the students will have fun while developing these skills!
And finally, the two surf desks are additional flexible seating options for my students. They allow the students the freedom to move around the room and complete work...or partake in one of these new Choice Time activities! It's a win-win!
