This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are middle schoolers at a Title I school in New York. My students come from diverse backgrounds and many from tough homes. They are overcoming social and emotional barriers each day to receive an education.
My students are active and enthusiastic.
They are motivated and eager to do well. They want to learn and are constantly seeking opportunities to take ownership of their learning.
Our school is in a high needs and high poverty area in which most children are on free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch programs. My students work hard despite the challenges they face. Many students stay after school, participate in after-school clubs and activities and are always striving to be, and do, better for themselves and for others.
My Project
Books are awesome. They allow students to escape reality, learn about another perspective, or see themselves reflected in the story being told.
These books will add much needed variety to our classroom library.
The books on immigration will be much appreciated by my students, especially with today’s political climate and the fact that many students will see themselves reflected in the stories being told. Adding more poetry books will allow students more exposure to poetry. It’s a genre that students have said they want more books to pick from. The graphic novels are always a great way to engage readers. The music stand will be used for students to give books talks or other related class presentations. I know that these resources will truly make a difference in the classroom. Thank you for helping to make this work possible.
