My Students
As a 1st grade teacher I spend a lot of time working on reading skills and in particular; comprehension. The students start in August eager to read and it is my goal to foster reading into every lesson that I can; whether it is Social Studies, Science or Centers.
My school is located in a military town (USMC Camp Lejeune), so we have a very transient population.
We also have the privilege of teaching children that come from low income neighborhoods and it is my goal to reach out to these students in particular, and make them want to be life long learners.
My Project
My students struggle with reading and comprehending non-fiction books. As a 2nd year teacher, my classroom library is rather small, so any donation of books would be greatly appreciated. The set of non-fiction books would allow me to have a small reading group of 5-6 children and each could have their own book. The map reading books would allow each child to have their resource, on their reading level, when we discuss maps in social studies.
Hands on texts - by having addition non-fiction books in my classroom, my students will be able to have their own copy of a book and that will allow them to buddy read, read in small groups or even take it home.
I want to encourage my students to be life long learners and improving a child's ability to read is a critical component of that goal.
