This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are natural-born scientists and explorers. They just don't know it yet! They are inquisitive, they want to learn, they're analytical, they crave new learning experiences, want to search for meaning and truth, share their own stories, and become agents of change to make the world a more verdant place. And it is my job to facilitate and give them access to the knowledge and the skills they need to get the answers and purpose they seek. We, like many public schools, struggle with purchasing new supplies, especially technology, and we must then rely on your generosity to fill in the financial and ultimately learning gaps that allow us to get the technology, experiences, and opportunities our students need to grow into passionate academics and global citizens.

My Project

My AP and IB students are required to learn and process a lot of content and skills throughout their course in preparation for the IB and AP examinations. Most of these projects and studies fall in two categories: empirical data collection via labs or experiments and secondly, artistic, content-based projects that tap their creative, academic and artistic side. To broaden and add to their wealth of knowledge, I began building a classroom library to which we have added title after title, in small batches to facilitate exploration and reading. Students' summer reading assignments is a staple of our courses and is a way to allow student learning to occur over the break. Students come back having read these titles in their small groups and present their information, sparking conversation, debate and allow others' curiosity to be tapped. Students create presentations and even Socratic seminars around the books. Some titles I requested are: The Book of Life, Messages from Islands and many more.

Thanks to you and your generosity, students will be given the chance to add a few more titles to open their minds, their perspectives and feed their curiosity beyond the textbook.

Reading non-fiction texts and allowing discussion to flourish is something that many students crave. Often we do not have the resources or access to current, modern texts that allow them a glimpse or prepare them for the next step in their academic and scientific careers: college and beyond. These texts also reflect a shift in our class library from an environmental-heavy focus, as we begin to offer a new, Biology-focused IB curriculum starting 2021-22. And lastly, we need to increase our representation of girls in STEM- so many of these books are for them! Let's get these young people ready for it!
