Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In my classroom, my main goal is to have 99.99% of my students reading. I want them to learn to enjoy reading. When many of my students enter the room they have never been to pre-kindergarten or daycare. Most of their parents have never read a book to them. It has been my experience that some parents have this idea that its my job to read to them and teach them to enjoy reading. These misconceptions and lack of involvement make my job ten times harder.
This year we are going to try something new. I plan to get my parents involved in their child's education. I plan to have a large reading center where students and parents can browse together and check out books. I also plan to have a reading night in the classroom. Parents will bring students back to school in their pajamas and listen to stories and read books. I plan to invite parents and others in the community to make this successful.
We are only lacking one small detail....BOOKS! I have a reading library but I would like a larger selection for students and parents to choose from. I am requesting some emergent books such as rookie readers and books from the 'I Can Read' series. I would like to have some popular reading selections such as 'Bear Snores On' and 'Cat in the Hat'.
Please help me start a love of reading with the gift of a new library center.
