This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom is filled with reluctant readers who have not been introduced to the right characters or the story that grabs them and pulls them in. I work with them to find their interests and show them how they can use these interests to find books that they'll enjoy. Once they find one, they're in! They admit to not reading and often say they do not like to read at the beginning of the school year. It is my goal to have each of them end the school year as readers, not because someone told them they had to, but because they enjoy it.
I teach English learners, some of whom are newcomers to the country and speak no English, and others who have been here a limited amount of time and speak little English.
We work all year to learn how to grow from failure and use it to get a step closer to success. Many of my students come to me with a sense of apathy formed from the lack of experiences of academic success in the past. We're a Title I school with more than 80% of our students classified as economically disadvantaged.
My Project
Books give students access to worlds they may otherwise never know. They allow them to see themselves in others and opens the window to others’ lives to let them see inside. These books will entertain and expand their social responsibility at the same time.
Through good books with diverse characters, my students learn to be compassionate and empathetic world changers.
Interesting reads keep my students engaged and excited about reading. The goal is to help every student find enjoyment in reading, to build lifelong readers. In doing so, my students will be better thinkers and overall better academically through the practice of reading and thinking as a natural habit.
