My classroom is located in a high-need, urban area of New York. This past school year I taught 9th grade Humanities, a combination of English and Social Studies. My class is an inclusion class with an emphasis on developing skills and preparing students for college.
This coming school year, I will move up with my students to the 10th grade and continue teaching Humanities. Many of my students are low-level readers and this past year we worked on developing reading skills through independent reading three times a week. My students have developed a love of reading but we need more books to continue this love of reading. Unfortunately, my school does not have the funds to purchase additional classroom library books.
When we return to school in September, my students will continue working on their reading skills, which will help them across the subject areas and as they move on to college. However, the selection of books in our classroom library is limited and our students have already read many of the titles. To keep them interested and intrigued in reading, we need new books for them to read that are current, exciting, and will draw their attention.

By donating to this project, you will make sure that my students continue to not only find pleasure in reading, but also continue working on reading skills that will help them in high school, college, and beyond.
