My Students
I have all the K-2nd Graders in our town and we have a mix of both rural and urban students. We also have a growing population of English Language Learners. Art is one place these students can feel successful as art does not rely upon their developing English skills. Art is universal...across any age, race and culture, rich and poor.
Each of 600 students come to my classroom for art.
We are a Choice-Based Art classroom. The students are the artists and our classroom is their studio. We discuss and try a variety of art making processes. My students are learning independence and choice-making, as well as, art.
My Project
Over the years, one of the most popular things to build with has been our building blocks. They are easy for builders of all skill levels to work with....even my students who struggle with their fine motor skills. However after years of use, the blocks are showing their age and starting to give students splinters!! It is time to find a replacement. Legos are a toy that all kids are familiar with using. Duplos are the same thing just much larger. Student who struggle with grip will find the Duplos much easier to use.
But like Legos, you can build anything with them and your imagination.
The addition of the duplos and the books will help students to build 3D art. Students will then have all they need to build an amazing sculpture of their dreams.
