This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are an urban high school lack of necessary materials and resources for our students to thrive. Our neighborhood is high poverty and we are considered to be one of the most challenging schools in our area. We have serious attendance problems and many students who are not engaged in learning.
I have taught here for 17 years and enjoy the creative spirit of my students.
Over the years, I have had the pleasure of seeing my students discover talents they never knew they had. I strive to expose them to as many diversified artistic experiences as I can.
At this point in the year, my students have acquired skills in hand building with clay and are now enjoying throwing on the potter's wheel. Working on the wheel is fun, fascinating, and engaging. I want to keep the momentum going.
My Project
Having good attendance is important to being successful in school.
Many of our students cannot get transportation to school and need to walk long distances of almost two miles.
They do not arrive at school on time and miss their first class. This results in the students falling behind in their studies.
Some students will choose not to come to school regularly due to the long walk. Another issue is walking to school in inclement weather which often results in getting sick.
The neighborhood surrounding the school is unsafe and some areas are full of abandoned buildings. Students need passes to overcome these obstacles so they can focus on their education.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
