My Project
Mental health is not traditionally a focus in education, but has become increasingly understood as a critical aspect of a student’s overall well-being. Schools are among the first places where mental health issues are recognized and addressed. Yet the students most impacted by mental health in schools are the ones who encounter the most barriers when trying to access services. Many of our students present with different social-emotional-related issues that make it difficult for them to regulate their emotions and behaviors, which can prove challenging when confronted with stressful moments.
We want to continue to use of a Calm Corner in our office so that students have a safe, non-judgmental space with the necessary tools to learn self-regulation and manage their emotions better.
I see my students' daily hardships. The majority have had more adverse life experiences before age 18 than many will encounter in a lifetime. Due to the cultural sitgma around mental health in our school community, unfortunately many students go years before being able to access the support they need. My job as Psychiatric Social Worker is to help remove the social-emotional barriers to learning so students can have the capacity to focus on their education.
